Why I Put Shoe Charms on a License Plate.

Makoauto founder thank you card with a custom DIY shoe charm license plate frame message

Hey everyone, Brian here.

Let’s be real for a second. If you’re a parent, you know the ultimate late-night survival test isn't running a marathon—it's navigating your living room barefoot in the dark without stepping on a rogue Lego or a rubber shoe charm. As a dad of three, my house is basically ground zero for tiny, colorful plastic things.

The lightbulb moment hit me on a random Tuesday. I was sitting in the infamous school drop-off line (iykyk 🙄), staring at the back of the minivan in front of me. It was just... gray. Boring. Standard. Meanwhile, my kids in the backseat were absolutely hyped, trading little rubber daisies and dinosaur charms to pop into their shoes.

I thought to myself: Wait a minute. We spend half our lives in our cars. We commute, we sit in the In-N-Out drive-thru, we shuttle kids to soccer practice. Why do our kids get to have all the fun expressing themselves, while our cars look like they just rolled out of a DMV training video?

That’s how the Makoauto DIY License Plate Frame was born right here in sunny California.

I wanted to design a literal blank canvas for your bumper. We created a grid frame perfectly sized so you can snap in those exact same shoe charms you and your kids already obsess over. Pop 'em in, swap 'em out for the holidays, or match your favorite sports team.

Now, full transparency: this is a true homegrown passion project, not something cranked out by a faceless mega-corp. We use a premium, ultra-flexible TPU rubber because no one wants their license plate rattling like a broken shopping cart on the freeway. Because of this super soft material, you might occasionally spot a tiny, microscopic injection mold mark on the back. It’s not a defect—it’s just proof that real humans put thought and care into making this for you.

Seeing you guys deck out your frames has been the wildest ride. From moms matching their frames to their toddlers' aesthetic, to college girls making their rides pop in the Target parking lot... you guys are giving major "Main Character" energy to the daily drive.

So, from my messy living room to your driveway—thank you. Thanks for supporting a small family business, and for bringing some much-needed good vibes to the road.

Keep it colorful, and I'll see you in the Trader Joe's parking lot.

Brian (and the 3 little bosses who inspired it all)
